Corrective Cycling Glasses For Safer Riding

If you have a vision defect that is corrected by wearing specs or contact lenses, riding a bicycle might not be too much fun. For eyeglasses wearers, it is rare to get ones that shield the eyes from wind blowing in at the sides, and this can cause two contrasting problems, depending on the individual. The side draught either dries out the surface of the eyes, which can cause itchiness and irritation; or it can cause them to fill with tears, which will affect your view of the road, not to mention making you look like you are crying! For contact lens wearers, the dry eye problem is even worse as it can cause the lenses to stick, rather painfully, so you will always need to carry eye-drops with you.

A perfect solution is to buy a pair of cycling glasses. For the contact lens wearing riders, there is a vast array of different brands and styles to choose from. You can even find an excellent selection while sitting at your computer - just try out Amazon for example. Some people prefer not to use contacts, opting instead for glasses to correct their vision defect. The choices for these people are slightly reduced, but many companies now have excellent ranges of prescription cycling glasses. They are divided into three broad categories: fixed lens cycle glasses made up with your own prescription; normal ones, adapted to enable the use of Rx inserts; and a single glasses frame allowing interchangeable prescription lenses.

If you are a part-time cyclist, perhaps only using your bike to get to work or college, you might want to investigate the first type, where you pick the cycle glasses frame that you want, and have them made up with your current prescription. Many opticians offer deals on their eyeglasses such as buy one, get one free. You might want to see if you can find a deal that lets you buy a new pair of glasses, with an option of getting a second pair from the store's sports range. The important thing for all cycling glasses is that they wrap around your head, and that they fit snugly onto your face, so the wind cannot blow in your eyes.

For more serious cyclists, the other two options are better. You could get a high quality pair of cycling glasses - check to make sure they can be fitted with Rx inserts, which will need to be bought separately. Many styles have the ability to interchange the sunglasses lenses to cater for different light conditions. With this type, you get your Rx insert with your own prescription lenses, and clip it onto the cycle glasses frame behind the normal shaded lenses. Easy!

If you do not want to be bothered with separate Rx inserts, some brands will make up your own prescription lenses in a variety of colors, so that you can switch them over depending on the light conditions, but they will also be correcting your vision. This is the more expensive option, but well worth the money, since they are perfectly designed for cycling, rather than being an add-on to a normal pair.

It is certainly safer for cyclists on the road if they wear some rudimentary eye protection, just to keep dirt and debris from flying into their eyes. But just as other road users who drive motor vehicles need to correct their vision by law, so too should cyclists. And now you know there is a huge variety of choice to give you security and a little bit of style.
